Another WordPress Update

Posted on 12 August 2007 by jose

I finally took some time to update to WP 2.2.2. Naturally, this update broke Democracy again, so I have to go through my mini-hack that lets it work with WP-Cache and figure out what changed from the original 2.0 to 2.2.2. I also have to go through my plugins to figure out what else I broke. I'm starting to feel nostalgic for Drupal's file structure. More on that later.

What else is new? Well, I briefly wandered into the .NET side of web development, working mostly with VB.NET and ASP.NET to maintain a complicated financial web application. A lot of business logic was in the database side, so I also got my hands dirty with SQL Server stored procedures and database abstraction layers. I got to try out Visual Studio 2005, which was actually pretty nice, even if the code I was maintaining, adding to, and optimizing wasn't.

I've gone back to the PHP side of things in my current position, where I'm working on PHP-scripted flat-files and considering how to move same into Drupal. Oh, yes. Drupal and I are back together again. I've been learning/playing with Drupal 5. What's more, I've been doing it in a Debian server environment, working on a Kubuntu Linux laptop. I get to use Debian and Ubuntu (Feisty) at work! Yay! I even went to the Cambridge Ubuntu release party (the Feisty Fiesta), where Maddog Hall told us the story about how he got that name.

As usual, working with Drupal at work has made me seriously consider re-installing it here on Hackwater. I've already downloaded and begun to install it on (which is down right now due to heat; my server heats up my home office enough during the summer that I'm actually willing to turn the damn thing off), where I've also been experimenting with Subversion. Another tool that I've been learning at work and that I've begun using at home.
