Drupal 6 maintenance mode missing head elements

Posted on 19 January 2012 by jose

Yesterday, I blacked out my site in protest of SOPA and PIPA. I figured the easiest way to do so was to create a quick custom theme just for the occasion, a minimalist theme inspired by BoingBoing's own SOPA Strike page. Further, I would switch my site to its offline mode, which meant I had to have a working maintenance page template.

SOPA Strike

Yesterday, Hackwater.com went offline in protest of the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA). As an Internet professional, I oppose any legislation that threatens my freedom to work in my medium; SOPA and PIPA would put Hackwater.com in legal jeopardy if I were to link to a site anywhere online that had any links to copyright infringement, putting a burden on me to ensure that every site I link to is clean of any "offending" links.

Note: This post may or may not be inspired by Brandon's post about The Blogenning over at Extant Musings. Because when life gets busy, posting here falls by the wayside. Let's see if I can correct that...

Burying the lede: oh, by the way...

This isn't necessarily big news, or even new news, but it's important to me: last June I became a Drupal module maintainer. I had previously submitted a couple of patches to one of the modules we use at work, and after some time without any comment, I decided to ask the module maintainer about it. He immediately offered me the position, since he hadn't been able to give the module the attention it wanted, and, with trepidation, I accepted.

A Linux laptop was inevitable

A month after getting my Android phone, I bought my first laptop. Personal laptop, that is; I've had laptops for work, and I've found them to be highly convenient when traveling or noveling, so I finally decided to get one of my own. More momentously, after years of running Windows on my personal machines but Linux on my work machines, I decided I was ready to make the jump to a Linux-only environment, meaning the new laptop would have to run Linux.

I Dream of Android

In December of 2009, I upgraded my phone. I went from a Razr to a Cliq, which just happens to be a smartphone running Android 1.5. At the time, it was the best T-Mobile/Android offering within my budget; I also took advantage of their 0% financing/installment payment plan, which is a fantastic deal. Interest-free, I'd pay them $20 a month until the phone is paid off. With my particular plan, this option was better than a 2-year contract and its subsidized phone (I actually did the math). This netted me an awesome Android phone running Linux (yay!) with a neat slide-out keyboard.

It's been such a long time

I think I should be blogging. Yeah. Time hasn't waited for me; it's been almost a year and a half. But first, I must apologize to Tom Scholz.

Big changes in my life. Over the next few days, I hope to update on these changes. To wit: I'm now living in Alpharetta, GA. I accomplished this in two moves. The first move was from Boston to temporary lodgings in Roswell, GA. Now I'm settled into a nice little home office in a condo (with a garage!) in Alpharetta. Still trying to adjust to living down here; the weather, ironically, has helped, as it has been colder than normal, which for me equates to just plain normal.

Drupal Sub-themes

Wow, time flies when you're having fun. I hadn't intended to spend the day playing with Drupal, but the incontrovertible fact is that it's almost ten already, so I have. The idea was to enable the Pirate module (Arrrr!!!) and then take care of a couple of security advisories that affected my installation, requiring that I update Drupal core and the Date module. This ultimately ended up leading to my creating a sub-theme for the Marinelli theme.

Arrrr you ready to talk like a pirate?

Today is (was, if you're reading this FROM THE FUTURE) International Talk Like a Pirate day. So wake your inner captain, growl at the nearest serving girl, and demand some rum (or liquor of your choice). I'm rocking my pirate bandanna and a pirate shirt, but the eye patch was just too much; your mileage may vary on this last.

Drupal upgrade post-mortem

Cutting to the chase: It was easy, if tedious.

Where have I been for the past few months? I wrote 50,000 words of a novel in November while maintaining a full work schedule. Most of the novel was written after midnight; just thinking about the process of writing it makes me feel tired. Work's kept me pretty busy with lots of Drupal work. I've been flexing my artistic muscles a bit, doing some logo work for myself and for friends. I've done some troubleshooting on websites; last week I helped fix the theme over at the Panthers BBS my friend Eric runs. And three weeks ago, I upgraded Hackwater.com to Drupal 6.
